My pastor taught about the qualities of an effective leader. The first one was that an effective leader is a God-chaser. Whatever the cost, one who chases God will not give up the chase. After a while, he will find himself overtaken by the One he is pursuing. God, now, become the Chaser. Oh, the joy when you are finally caught!

Have you ever seen a child running in circles, chasing his father? He runs and runs, but his little legs cannot seem to go quickly enough. Eventually, if he doesn't give up, Daddy will be right behind him. He is, now, both chasing and being chased. His daddy reaches down, scoops him up and holds him close amidst giggles of joy.

Our popular culture is populated with "famous" people living lives marked by pride, independence, excess and defiance. Their self-centered lives are publicized and romanticized as the natural way to live. It's a backwards, upside down lie. Karlene Hamilton turn the truth right side up as she retells the stories of several key Bible characters emphasizing their response to God as key to the growth of their faith and freedom.

Submission and obedience to God is a natural way to live. We are made by Christ and for Christ. When we find him, we find ourselves and we find our brothers and sisters. When we yield to God we do not forfeit our freedom; we find true freedom living in him, by him and for him. If we live apart from him or in defiance of him, we go to pieces and destroy our lives and the lives of others. When we live consciously according to Christ, we really live. When we submit to God and obey his word we find harmony with ourselves and God's universe enabling us to walk the earth as a conqueror, afraid of nothing and loving everyone. This is the way to freedom.
